Making 2500 copies

I just returned from my volunteer stint at my daughter's school.  There are about 30 children in her class and I am one of two parents signed up to volunteer.
I spent an hour making copies for the teacher.  That is what she needed help with today - making copies.  In return my child will be noticed more and I will have constant communication with her teacher.  Totally worth it in my mind.

I know many parents say they do not have time.  But as I said to one mom, school starts at 7:30am, even if you go in for half an hour once a month, that will be something.  Parent complain and say "the teacher this and the teacher that" but what are they the parents doing?
With 30 students in one class, I cannot see how each one will get individual attention.  At least a quarter will go unnoticed.  Discipline is a huge problem. The teachers spend a huge deal of time disciplining instead of teaching.  Many parents would rather be buddies with their kids than discipline them.

In my development, the bus driver is taking heat because she disciplined some kids on the bus.  A few kids were being disruptive and so after a few days all the kids were given assigned seats.  She is now being labeled as "mean".  One of the parents of the unruly kids confronted the bus driver in front of all the children.  I was pleased with the bus driver's response "my bus, my rules".  This particular parent has a child whose reputation precedes him.  Last year he had a "special" seat on the bus due to his behavior.  What lesson is this mother teaching to her child, when instead of making it known that his behavior is unacceptable, she confronts the person charged with getting our children to and from school safely in a demeaning manner.

It really is frustrating to me that I tell my children to be respectful and let their conscience guide them, only to know my neighbors think good manners are for someone else.

  1. Totally agree. I think the problem is that these parents are incapable of influencing their kids' manners in a positive way. America is a country where the most unruly and selfish people are rewarded while the well mannered ones are ignored. Most of these people achieved success by displaying a total disregard for others, so why teach their kids otherwise? uzo
